Cheer Skill Expectations
Mascots (Ages 5-6)
At the mascot level, cheerleaders will focus on building a foundation in cheerleading. Skills expected include basic jumps such as a toe touch and pike jump, as well as simple arm motions and cheers. They will also work on learning basic stunts, such as the thigh stand, with assistance from coaches. Additionally, the emphasis will be on developing teamwork, confidence, and enthusiasm while performing in front of an audience.
8U (Ages 7-8)
The 8U cheer team will expand on the skills learned at the mascot level. Cheerleaders should master basic jumps, including front and back hurdlers, and begin to integrate proper arm motions and formations during cheers. Basic stunts, such as the prep and basic shoulder sits, are expected to be performed with greater independence and focus on safety. Teams will also start learning simple choreography and basic tumbling skills, such as forward rolls, handstands and cartwheels, while building teamwork and sportsmanship.
10U (Ages 9-10)
As the cheerleaders progress to the 10U level, they will refine their techniques and begin to learn intermediate skills. Cheerleaders should be able to perform a variety of jumps with proper technique. Stunting will progress to include full extensions, libs and the ability to catch and support a flyer in a cradle. Additionally, participants will work on basic tumbling skills such as back walkovers and cartwheels, while also practicing more complex choreography and performance skills, enhancing their ability to entertain and engage an audience.
12U (Ages 11-12)
At the 12U level, cheerleaders will focus on advanced skills and routines. They are expected to perform multiple types of jumps with varied techniques and combinations, along with solid execution of stunts like full-ups, lib holds, and tosses. Tumbling skills will include cartwheels, back walkovers, aerials and back handsprings. Choreography will become more intricate, incorporating transitions and formations that require teamwork and synchronized movements. Further emphasis will be placed on performance skills and the ability to execute routines under pressure during competitions.
14U (Ages 13-14)
The 14U cheer team will be expected to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in advanced cheerleading skills and techniques. Cheerleaders should execute a variety of jumps, including combinations and stunt sequences, with precision and confidence. They will perform advanced stunts such as extended doubles and pyramid structures, showcasing their ability to work cohesively as a team. Tumbling requirements vary. In addition to mastering routine elements, emphasis will also be placed on competition readiness, including proper conditioning, choreography execution, and showcasing strong performance presence in front of judges and audiences. Athletes should be steadily working towards an advanced level of cheerleading in preparation for the high school level.
